We use a machine learning approach that provides a probability forecast of all possible games that can be used to study the likely course of the tournament in the simulation. The random forest model is learned as a training data from the UEFA European Championship tournaments from 2004 to 2016 and then applied to the current information to obtain a prediction for the 2020 tournament. The model provides a predicted number of goals for each team in every possible game of the tournament and a bivariate Poisson distribution is used to calculate the probability of a victory, a draw or a defeat for each game.

Using a hybrid random forest, the expected number of goals can be scored for each team in all possible games. The ability to assess this is based on retrospective data from historic internationals over the past eight years. As a result, the predicted number of goals for each of the teams can be used 100,000 times to simulate the whole tournament.

The knockout stages begin with the second leg, followed by the semi-finals, quarter-finals and final of Euro 2020 on Sunday 11 July 2021. The six teams who finish first in their group are the top four progressing. Each team plays twice against every other team in its group, and the top two in each group qualify for the knockout phase.

Euro 2020 is the first European Championship to be held not in one host country, but in different locations on the continent. On June 11 the Stadio Olimpico in Rome will host the opening match, while England’s national stadium, Wembley, will host the semi-final and final. Both stadiums will host three group games from 11 to 23 June.

England reached the Euro 2020 finals with Denmark on Wednesday, their first semifinal since 1966 after captain Harry Kane’s team won in extra time at Wembley Stadium 2-1. The goal will lead England to their first major final since 1966 when they face Italy at Wembley on Sunday. Italy are through to the final after beating Spain on penalties yesterday, where they will face either England or Denmark.

The tournament took place in Europe as UEFA celebrated the tournament’s 60th anniversary and fans from several countries and cities had the chance to meet the superstars up close. The identities of the four play-off teams were not known at the time of the draw but were determined in the play-offs.
